What is a foot care nurse and why do I need one?

A foot care nurse is a professional nurse who has completed specialized coursework and hands-on training in foot care. Following coursework and training, a nurse takes a certification exam and, if a passing grade is achieved, receives either a Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN) credential, or a Certified Foot Care Specialist (CFCS) credential, depending on the credentialing organisation.

Foot care nurses may work in any healthcare setting, and many foot care nurses also work independently to serve the needs of homebound clients who are unable to receive services in a clinic setting for a variety of reasons.

A foot care nurse gathers a medical history, performs assessments of the lower extremities, and formulates a care plan that incorporates routine foot care with conservative supportive interventions.  Like other nursing disciplines, a foot care nurse will consider the client’s total health, knowing that the body is a system whose parts must work together for optimal health.

Even those foot care nurses working independently in the community consider themselves part of an interdisciplinary team, and will refer patients to services that will improve foot and overall health.  These specialists may include podiatry, diabetic education, orthopedists, vascular consults, dermatology, wound care, and the client’s own primary care provider.  This practice of including other disciplines contributes to early interventions that may reduce complications that lead to more serious foot conditions.

Problems that may arise in the absence of routine foot care include wounds, advanced changes in the structure of the foot due to diabetes, progressing skin or fungal infections, injury due to uncared for nails, skin issues that may lead to breakdown, and general discomfort that affects the quality of life.

If you are having difficulty caring for your feet and nail, consider a foot care nurse!
